Chennai Super Kings retains Dhoni, Raina, Albie & Vijay

And no surprises in Chennai Super Kings retention. And.. they have made the same choices as mine. Retained players below
  1. MS Dhoni
  2. Suresh Raina
  3. Albie Morkel
  4. Murali Vijay
With the easy decisions made, now comes the hard decisions - who to buy in the auction.

Key Things to Remember
  1. 4 players are going to cost 50% of the $9 Million budget for all teams. So Chennai & Mumbai are lucky that they got much more value for their $4.5 Million. But to retain this advantage, Chennai should choose next 3 players who will cost 25% of the $9 Million budget wisely
  2. Key Positions for Chennai in which they have to invest their 25%:
    1. Opener (preferably left-handed to compliment Vijay)
    2. Strike Fast Bowler
    3. Strike Spinner
  3. Indians as much as possible. As last IPL showed, World-Class Indians are much more valuable than World Class Foreigners
  4. Buy them Young: Unlike the first auction, this team will never change. So it is crucial that CSK builds the most successful franchise rather than just focusing on short-term gains
Objective: Build a World-Class Team.

My pick of 15 players below... (Players in bold text are my picks)
  1. Opener 1 - Vijay
  2. Opener 2 - atleast 2 of them to bought
    1. Gambhir
    2. Shaun Marsh
    3. Davy Jacobs
    4. Warner
  3. Raina
  4. Atleast 3 of them to be bought
    1. Eoin Morgan
    2. Ross Taylor
    3. Pujara
    4. Uthapa
    5. Badrinath
  5. 1 Batsman from above list
  6. Dhoni
  7. Albie Morkel
  8. Bowling Allrounder
    1. Broad
    2. Maharoof
  9. Spinner 1
    1. Ashwin
    2. Ojha
    3. Shadab Jakati
    4. Swann
  10. Spinner 2 - 1 Player from above list
  11. Strike Fast Bowler
    1. Zaheer Khan
    2. Ashish Nehra
    3. Bollinger
    4. Theron
Do you agree with my picks? Do you have any suggestions for Chennai Super Kings Team w.r.t auction? Post your comments below.

If a team can retain only 1 overseas player and 3 Indian players,how come Mumbai has retained Malinga and Pollard?

CSK needs a backup keeper. Can't expect Dhoni to keep wickets in all games. Parthiv is a good bet now; I am sure he will be pricey now after his back to back 50s.

NZ contracts provide a clear window for IPL; meaning they will be available for full IPL duration unlike aussies/english.

Both McCullum's are ideal for CSK. Brendon can open as well as keep wickets. Nathan is a handy spinner and useful lower order batsman. Both are excellent fielders as well.

1. Vijay
2. Marsh/Jacobs/Warner/McCullum/Greame Smith
3. Raina
4 & 5. Badri/David Hussey/Michael Hussey/KP/AB DeVilliers
6. Dhoni
7. Albie
8. Nathan McCullum/Broad/Angelo Matthews/Kallis
9 & 10. Ashwin/Jakati (I dont think Jakati is listed in auction)/Swann/Murali
11. Steyn/Bollinger/Theron/Morne Morkel/Nannes

@Arjoon,
Peter Siddle is fast.. But very erratic.. So doubtful that CSK will pick him..

@Gowtham,
Team can maintain 4 players. Maximum Indian Player could be retained - 3 and Maximum foreign players who could be retained - 1

While CSK choose to retain 3 Indian + 1 foreign, Mumbai choose to retain 2 Indian + 2 foreign players.

@Cub,

Thanks for pointing out McNullum.. Missed him in the list.. Yeah Brendon would surely make a good choice.. But might be expensive.. If it is just a back-up keeper would prefer an Indian wicketkeeper.

I also wanted desperately to pick KP.. But was worried about the impact on the dressing room.. And the fact that he would be expensive.. And Theron would also be a very good purchase..

You have missed out players like Abhinav Mukund, Arun Karthik, Anirudda Srikanth who will not go under the hammer (they havnt represented India). All of them are local players and young. Hope chennai buys them out of the Auction..

Hi All CSK Fans....

The retention of the four stars is a great move by the team management.

However the remaining team has to be balanced to continue the winning trend in the IPL4.

Getting them young is good but its the experience in the team that is more impotant.

To start with a left hand combination for Vijay would suit wiht Hussey and Parthi Patel would be apt and also Parthi could be the second keeper (remember what happened to Dhoni in IPL3), Shaun Marsh could be the spare option for the bidding if required.

The two middle order along with Badhrinath as mentioned could be young and talented.

The allrounder to support Morkel is a must for the team and this time a good proven allrounder could be an asset and likes of Anjelo Mathew is a much needed one and talking of Board as one is absurd. On the spinners Aswin is the choice but it is not fair to forget Muthiah and go Swann or Ojah...muthiah is a better strike bowler in 20/20 than them and Jakathi could be the other choice. In the pace end Bollinger should continue and could be supported with Praveen Kumar as here we really want young blood and not the likes of Zaheer and Nehra and can be really added with Rusty Theron who would be a real death bowler that the team lacked so far.

It all depends on the balance funds of the team management and how they work out the plan with that through the expert opinion of Dhoni - Flemming and team.

@new_blogger,

I have not covered the players who are not in auction.. intentionally..

@CareerreckoneR,

Parthiv would be expensive. Because there are not many good wicket-keeper batsman in India. Also i don't prefer him - He is more suited for Test match kind of play rather than T20s. If required, buying Brendon McNullum or some other foreign wicket keeper might make more sense..

In my point of view, how other teams are going to spend their first half money is important on what kind of players will be avilable for CSK in the auction. I believe CSK won't go hard in auction atleast in the first two spots (base prices)

Robin said...

@Sigamani,

I would say don't make the assumption.. Though CSK might not be able to bid aggressively for in-deman players, they will still bid and win some in the first two base price slots.. Also remember base prices are lot cheaper in this auction

Hi Robin,

Sure agree to your opinion however after seeing the game of Patel in the last two one day against NZ u cannot still argue that he is not a 20/20 material, and feeling him costly over McCullum is not just.

As viewed from the comments its the team proposition back in the dressroom that matters, taking senior and professional players would lack commitment towards the team (as we have seen in the case of Flintoff and Oram previously).

Also its worth remembering the commitment of players like McCullum, Board to their own country.

Keeping all the giants like Greame Simth, AB De, Ross Taylor, Mc Cullam, Kallis in the team will have an effect in the dressroom which is not required. And moreover it will not matter or make a big difference in a 20-20 game.

Dhoni is there to lead from the front and for him to keep his cool and balance, just a good team with promising players,both young and experienced (like Raina, Vijay, Badri, Aswin )and little experience with knowledge (like Murali, Albie, Hussey) are enough.

The rest could be dsiplayed by CSK in the field on the day when it is required....which sure they will.

guys this is the base price list..!! considering we need a lot of indian bowling talent nd strike bowlers i wud say dat we hav a gud chance of buyin sum gud players.!!! we hav 2 go for atleast 1 player (probably an allrounder ) as we can hav 1 big buy .. getting back ashwin wud be a headache as his base price is 100k nd KKR nd 4 other teams r really keen on him.. but the gud news is apart from expensive buys there r a lot of players priced reasonably nd most teams wud not go for them as they haav their own plans..!!

davy jacobs is priced at a 20k as most of u hav mentioned him..

aother thing is that it is impossible to get many players like mccullum,smith,devilliers,marsh,
kallis etc nd players in the 300k nd 400k category as their prices in the auction could shoot upto about 1500k nd more as most teams around hav 9 million 2 spend unlike us.. nd i donno wat has happened 2 the BIG MATTHEW HAYDEN.. his name has not featured in this list given by hte bcci... sad of him to leave ipl..

but good thing is that players like Theron ( who deafeated chennai in the super over )
collin ingram , dwayne bravo , brendon taylor,
Ryan ten Doeschate,abishek nayar,ashraful,razzak ,
Roelof van der Merwe,Lonwabo Tsotsobe,
Lendl Simmons,
Adrian Barath, are available at 50 k.. nd they could be a useful add.. and at 20k there are sum players lyk thisara perera, kulasekara,mubarak and some really exciting domestic talent from australia nd south africa..

there are although some good indian buys for 100k but im afraid we hav 2 pay atleast about 300k-400k in the auction as many teams also want them .. these players include indians like jadeja ,tiwary,pujara, balaji,parthiv,munaf,dinda,viny kumar, badrinath, mithun, chawla nd others ashwin is also included in this category but his price is gonna b high in auction..

excellent foreign players in the 100k category r available.. expect their value 2 increase upto 600k-700k in the auction but some great talent is available.. these include names like maharoof,wayne parnel, morne morkel (very useful buy),nathan mcullum,james franklin(he is an all rounder now :D), jesse ryder,kemp,tamim iqbal (extreme opener he has the best strike rate next to sehwag this year),phil hughes,ian bell,clint mckay,hilfenhaus,chris tremlett,styris,dilhara fernando,jerome taylor ,fidel edwards nd others...

the 200k category is also loaded with big names but it could not be possible to get most of them..!! as players like gambhir ,steyn,uthappa , bollinger,nannes,warner may hav a base price of 200k but may end up with in excess of a million.!!

a good example of this was ishant sharma had a base price of 200k in the first season but teams fought out for him nd he was finally sold 2 the knight riders for 950 k.!!! :D so this could happen theis time also...

so we should
