Chennai Super Kings' Strategy during Auction

With the base prices of the players released by BCCI (Complete List available at cricinfo), it is time to plan Chennai Super Kings' strategy during auction.

Good News from Auction List
1. Ashwin is listed at 100K USD: This means that most of the teams would have spent their money on other players, when his name is picked for auction.
2. Slot 3: Most of the players in CSK fan wishlist (Davy Jacobs, Gambhir, Warner, Bollinger, Eoin Morgan,  Harris, Pujara,Robin Uthappa, Ashish Nehra) are present in 3rd Slot (Base Price 200K). So Chennai Super Kings have a realistic chance of landing the players they target.
3. Mathew Hayden: Hayden is not in the auction list. Personally, I expect him to be involved in some capacity (batting coach, reserve batsman, etc.. ) in the next year CSK Setup.

Bad News:
1. McCullum, Shaun Marsh, Swann, Broad & Ross Taylor: All these players are present on the first list. So it would be tough to land any of them.
2. Angelo Mathews & Murali: Both of them have choosen to be present in the second Slot. (Base Price of 300K USD). Tough to retain if teams are ready to bid for these players.

Our Strategy:
As I wrote in my earlier blog post, Chennai Super Kings should focus on buying
1. Opener - (Aggressive Left-Handed Batsman)
2. Strike Bowler - Fast (Preferably a foreigner)
3. Strike Bowler - Spin (Preferably an Indian)

Slot 1
Bid for the following players  - McCullum, Shaun Marsh, Swann, Broad & Ross Taylor & Dilshan. But only if they are priced at less than 600K.
Reason - No foreign players (other than all rounders) are worth more than 600K. If it Genius Talent, utmost 750k is a reasonable amount.

Slot 2
Same Strategy as slot 1. Bid for Angelo Mathews & Murali. But bid only until 600K. (Reason same as above). For Zaheer Khan, you can bid until 1.25 Million USD.

Probable Scenario after Slot 1 & 2: Chennai Super Kings would have bought utmost 1 player during the slot 1 & slot 2

Slot 3:
This is the slot Chennai Super Kings should be really aggressive. Lot of good players are available in this list. And considering that most of the teams would have spent 4.5 Million by now, all the teams would be on a level playing field hereafter.

Aggressive Bidding Strategy:
1. Bollinger/Harris (It is essential Chennai Super Kings lands one of these players. Maximum Bid Value - 450K)
2. Eoin Morgan
3. Ashish Nehra (If Zaheer Khan is not bought, u can bid until 1 Million for Ashish Nehra)
4. Praveen Kumar (If Zaheer Khan is not bought, u can bid until 750K for Praveen Kumar. Otherwise 600K)
5. Robin Uthappa (Can Bid Until 1 Million for Robin)
6. Dale Steyn (Bid Value - 750K for the world's best fast bowler)

Slot 4:
This is where Chennai Super Kings can make value buys like
1. Ian Bell (worth 300K)
2. Balaji (Worth 200k)
3. Ashwin(Worth 500K)
4. Badrinath(Worth 200K)
5. Pujara (Worth 200K)
6. Morne Morkel/Wayne Parnell (Worth 300K)
7. Maharoof (Worth 500K)
8. Mitchelle Marsh (Worth 100K)
9. Abhishek Nayar (Worth 200K)
10. Theron (Worth 100K)

Slot 5&6: I don't know most of them. So can't make a comment on those players. Other than Dwayne Bravo who is listed at 50K, others might not be a huge value ad.

Probable Team CSK would be ending with

I have very similar views to yours except on 2 counts.

"3. Ashish Nehra (If Zaheer Khan is not bought, u can bid until 1 Million for Ashish Nehra)
4. Praveen Kumar (If Zaheer Khan is not bought, u can bid until 750K for Praveen Kumar. Otherwise 600K)"

IMO there are 2 things to be kept in mind before going in to the auction. And since the selection is gonna be Indians and non Indians we have to keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of these 2 broad classifications.

A) India's strength is their Batsman and Spin bowlers.
B)Strength of other teams is usually their big hefty fast bowling alrounders and all out fast bowlers.

So there is no point in bidding for an Indian Fast bowler and this includes zaheer khan...we have to play to our strengths...bid all out for a couple of indian spinners from jakati, ashwin, murali karthik, pragyan ojha and also bid all out for 2 fast bowlers from Ryan harris, doug bollinger, stuart broad, clint mckay or dale steyn.

But other than that I like your broad strategy and lets hope CSK gets a strong squad this time too.well written.

Some foreign Players like Daniel Christian/Aaron finch/Colin Ingram/David Miller/Clint McKay/James Pattinson/mathew Wade/Michael Klinger/Callum Ferguson/Tim Paine/Tim Southee/James Franklin can be considered.

Friend!
I am another CSKite from chennai ....I am not sure with some of your your selection ideas...

Davy Jacobs...might not be effective in India coz...1.Indian pitches suit spinners. I am not sure with his spin playing capabilities. 2. Here, spinners start operating as early as the 2nd over..

maharoof - inconsistent

morgan - still has to prove in india

theron - is still being tested

mitchell marsh - I am not sure abt this

One thing with the CSK selection committee.... When they spend Huge money...They will always pick the tried and tested ones with high durability....like the way they picked, Haydos, Hussey, Murli, Flintoff, Oram, Kemp.....morkel was a surprise though...

My Big picks group....(that might figure in your list)
1. broad
2. steyn
3. morkel
4. ross taylor
5. :-( i d love to include pakistan players ....(wont be included though)

surprise ones....could be given a thought...
1. lee - could be a surprise... and cheap
2. thomas odoyo - I am not sure if this fellow is still around... played for kenya....used to be an alrounder..
3. sakib al hasan - bangladeshi all-rounder
4. finn - usefull tall bowler
5. ganapathy vignesh.... who played for chennai superstars.....(all rounder)

@Prasana,
I agree that it would be better to buy a foreign fast bowler than an Indian fast bowler. Only worry is that foreign fast bowlers(Australian, England, etc. ) may not be available for entire IPL. That is why my preference for Indian bowlers provided that they come up at the right price.

@Suresh,
I agree that i don't know most of the Slot 5 & 6. Better for VB, Fleming, Dhoni & Co. to shortlist these players.

@Anonymous,
I agree that Davy Jacobs is not as effective as fast bowlers against Spinners. But he is not a bad player of spinner. Last time in auctions - it made sense to go for tried & tested players since the teams can retain players only for 3 years. But now, these players are for eternity. So makes a lot more sense to buy the future stars rather than old stars.

ya agree with you robin on most of the selection ideas. Ofcourse we have to pick either ashish nehra or praveen kumar, doug bollinger/steyn is a must for our team composition. If murali cannot be bought v can as well try for ojha to strengthen our sin dept. As far as batting is concerned we have to go for warner/jacobs and if possible any other alrounder who can bat and bowl that will be enough to maintain our winning stategy.
Vujay
Warner/Jacobs
Raina
Badri
Morkel
Dhoni
Anirudha
ashwin
Ojha
Praveen/ashish
Dougie/steyn
will forma consolidated team to compete in IPL 4.

I think Clint McKay is an excellent bowler to bid on. He is extremely smart with his change of paces. G.Vignesh is a good choice. I have seen some of his inning in ICL and he is a definitely good buy

my opinion is
we can get symonds who is in the 3rd slot he is a sllrounder and can perfectly bat in any order, his economy rate in ipl is good and his career in aus is almost over, so he will play all match.

warner ( more than 500k)
vijay
raina
symonds (400k)
batrinath (200k)
dhoni
A.morkel
ashwin/ jakati/ shakib ul hasan (400k)
balaji (200k)
morne morkel (his base price is 100k) (400k)
G. vignesh

This means that CSK should get atleast the following:

1 Indian Fast Bowler
1 Indian Spinner (preferably Ashwin)
1 Indian Batsman
---------------------
1 Foreign Attacking Opening Batsman (will be good if he can double up as a wkt keeper [Davey Jacobs/Tim Paine]
1 Foreign All-Rounder
1 Foreign Spinner
1 Foreign Fast Bowler
----------------------
---------------------

CSK will have hard time competing with a limited budget. Indian players will be most sought after as there are only 49 listed for 10 teams. In my reckoning CSK could have: Warner, Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Piyush Chawla, Balaji, Bollinger, Theron, Tyagi, Paine + 2$100K foreigners.

Here is my MV list- 150 players total $68.5million. Interested to know whom you folks would pick from this lot.

yes, Robin We definetly need a world class fast bowler who can intimidate the oppositon as well.. but the problem with this is our money . we just hav 1 foreigner in albie morkel ... dats it.. nd we hav 2 get atleast 7 more guys ...

we do need some indian nationals from the auction...!!! some1 like a tiwary or nayar... ganapathy vignesh, nd r sathish should hav been bought last time itself.. mumbai wer before us... im not sure if there r any domestic fast bowlers..

we can afford 1 expensive buy like say

-yusuf pathan/yuvraj for abt 1.2 mil...
-ashwin or any other class spinner ( i expect him atleast to reach 400k)
-dale steyn/morne morkel/some other quickie (may be around 700k)
-a smashing opener * Tamim iqbal/davy jacobs/warner/phil hughes (max 450k maybe/ jacobs & hughes r really cheap though)
-eoin morgan/ mike hussey/david hussey/ ( 600k maybe..)
-munaf/balaji/dinda/mithun/tyagi /unadkat/gony/pankaj singh/umesh yadav(they all command similar prices max 150-200k maybe)
-an indian middle order batsman... ( say uthappa/dinesh karthik/rohit sharma 600k lets say max):D
so we spent about 4 million on dese guys now...
so balance 500k coulld be wisely spent on some uncapped south african / australian or some other english player as they hav a strong domestic structure nd they could well be the stars as u hav mentioned previously..!! players like finch , mitchell marsh ,daniel harris, rilee roussow,
Michael Klinger, blizzard, birt hav performed for their domestic sides..

and some internationals like perera, franklin do come at a lower price... so guess it wud b good bargain..

so the team should look like

-vijay
-jacobs/hughes/warner/iqbal
-raina
-mike hussey/david hussey/morgan
-srikkanth(or any local talent or indian national)
-MS Dhoni
-yusuf pathan
-albie morkel
-r.ashwin
-any indian seamer
-dale steyn/morkel /bolly or ny good world class foreign seamer

hoping we get a spinning all rounder like yusuf or yuvraj if we fail on that we shud go for shakib al hassan instead and compensate morkel or the other foreign slot depending upon the pitch.. nd buy a class indian fast bowler like zak or nehra which could cost a lot..!! :D

Anonymous said...

we should ideally try and buy some pace allrounders...bravo would be the best choice...can bat up the order and can take the new ball.....daniel christian or franklin could be a good second choice all rounder......we also need a foreign opener preferably david warner or grame smith but i guess they would be expensive....so tamim could be a cheap option if needed....we need to buy bollinger for all the gr8 work he has done for us last year....and relatin indian players we gotta spend for ashwin or ojha or nehra....

Anonymous said...

plus it would be better to have new zealand then west indian and then south african players compared to aussies and english thy will be really loyal to the franchise and in a situation needed to choose between one of the two, they will surely choose ipl

Anonymous said...

i dont know wy ppl are always forgetting shakib-al-hasan.. a ud spinner and a gud batsman as well..
ideal pick in spinning dept will be
shakib-al-hasan/murali kartik
pace dept
steyn/zak
praveen kumar/nehra/rp singh
all rounder
maharoof - perfect signing
opener
davy jacobs- perfect
middle order- 2 out of the following lot
badri/pujara/rohit sharma/david hussey/uthapa/badani(i feel he still has the fire)

Anonymous said...

and also pick ganapathy vignesh that all rounder opener who played for chennai superstars.. he is really gud.. :-)

Most of the Indian players can bowl spin which would be the suit for Chepauk stadium(turning wicket).Other than spinners,I would love to see Michael Klinger in the team & a bowler or 2 who reaches 140km/hr (for away matches like Punjab's & Bangalore's stadium) consistently or a bowler like Clint Mckay (For Chepauk Stadium) who is hard to hit for his slower balls.I loved the way CSK spent its money on the first day of auction. No matter how much big a player is,T20 just needs performances in just 3 hrs of play. Any team can beat any team on a given day as its just an another cricket match between 11 players in 2 teams. CSK trusts its players whoever plays for it and so the players will respond to it...
