IPL Season 4 - Probable Squad

In CSK squads of yester year, predicting the playing XI was very easy. Except for 1 or 2 players, others used to pick themself. But in this season, except for 3 or 4 players, others have to perform regularly to stay in the team. This clearly shows that this squad is a much more stronger squad than the last three years. (That does not necessarily mean that the playing XI in this season would be much stronger than the last year)  Predicting the probable squad for the first match against Knight Riders

1. Murali Vijay
2. Anirudha Srikkanth
3. Suresh Raina
4. Badrinath
5. Dhoni
6. Albie Morkel
7. Scot Styris
8. Kulasekara
9. Ashwin
10. Shadab Jakati
11. Tim Southee

No-Brainer Selections
1. Murali Vijay
3. Suresh Raina
4. Badrinath
5. Dhoni
6. Albie Morkel
9. Ashwin
11. Tim Southee

So the team has to make choices only about
1. Opening Batsman
2. Batting All-rounder
3. Bowling All-rounder
4. Medium-Fast Bowler

Opening Batsman
Options are 1. Upul Tharanga 2. Anirudha Srikkanth 3. G Vignesh 4. Abhinav Mukund - This is one of the toughest decision to be made by Chennai Super Kings Team.
1. Upul Tharanga - He is coming after a purple patch from World Cup. It won't be a easy decision to leave him in the bench
2. Vignesh - Most Attacking Batsman of the lot. His bowling could be a vital cog for the team. And his ICL performances could not be discounted by anybody. Best fielder in the lot. But his performances in the recent domestic T20 season has been out shadowed other TN openers.
3. Abhinav Mukund - Most talented and the only left handed batsman of the three Indian batsmen. But his T20 credentials is still not established
4. Anirudha Srikkanth - His performance in last year's Champions League can't be easily forgotten by the team. Thanks to that, I believe that Fleming would give him the first opportunity. (I would pick Upul Tharanga ahead of Srikkanth)

Batting All-rounder
Options are 1. Scot Styris 2. Faf Du Plessis
The experience of Styris dictates that he is picked ahead of Faf Du Plessis.

Bowling All-rounder/Bowler
Options are 1. Suraj Randiv 2. Kulasekara 3. Shadab Jakati
Expect Shadab Jakati to be picked. A left-arm spinner can't be easily played by right-handers.

Bowler
Options are 1. Yo Mahesh 2. Sudeep Tyagi 3. Suraj Randiv 4. Kulasekara
Knowing Dhoni, I would expect a pace bowler to be picked. And Kulasekara is the best of the lot. But it could be Sudeep Tyagi who might be playing if Upul Tharanga is picked as an opener.

Who do you think should play against Kolkata Knight Riders?

I don't foresee Dhoni, Raina and Kulasekara playing any role in the first match.

Saha will take over the gloves. And we might see either Mukund opening up with Vijay and Aniruddh playing in the middle.

Faf du Plessis might play instead of Kulasekara in 1st match.

We still have 5 bowling options: Morkel, Southee, Styris, Ashwin & Jakati with Faf providing us with a backup option.

We don't need 6 bowlers. Among your XI, I would replace kulasekara with either Tharanga or Vicky and push Anirudh lower down the order. Or take Du Plessis and open with Anirudh.
When Bollinger and Hussey (and Bravo) are back, then its a selection nightmare :)

raina
dhoni
morkel
scott
plessis
southee
ashwin

Vijay
Anirudha
Raina
Badri
Dhoni
Albie
Styris / Du Plessis
Ashwin
Jakati
Kulasekara
Southee

Replace Kulasekara with Bollinger once he is ready, and Hussey in at the cost of Styris / Du Plessis

And is Tharanga a part of the squad ? I didnt c his name in the official site of CSK

If Randiv has to be played, then again bring in Saha for Styris / Du Plessis and replace Jakati with Randiv

I am not so sure abt Tharanga's capabilities in T20 despite his current form which is gud

And playing our Indian pacers means disaster, enough said on that

Wow we have lots more unavailable players than I thought. I think this would be our most balanced team from the players we have available:

1. Vijay
2. Srikkanth
3. Raina
4. Morkel
5. Dhoni
6. Du Plessis
7. Badrinath
8. Jakati
9. Southee
10. Ashwin
11. Kulasekara

Out of the available players, Srikkanth deserves first shot. Play Du Plessis so we know how strong our depth is for the rest of the season. He could turn out to be a superstar.

6 bowlers give us good variety and bowling depth for the match. From Vijay to Jakati at 8 there is plenty of batting right down the order.

I predict a solid win for Chennai.

I have seen a tendency of late by Dhoni to stick to whatever he had in his mind. For example, Ashwin was hardly given a chance in IPL2. Similarly I expect hardly any chance for G Vignesh.

If I take the words of Dhoni granted, then I guess all the positions are already filled namely,

1. M Vijay
2. Aniruddha
3. Raina
4. Badri
5. Dhoni
6. Morkel
7. Du Plesis
8. Styris
9. Ashwin
10.Tim Southee
11. Jakathi

I expect this team to play. It may not be the best. Still I have a gut feeling that Dhoni sticks to what he has spoken yesterday!

Neverthesless will cont to support CSK & Dhoni!

@Shanjitha,
Agree that Plessis is a better batsman than Styris. But Styris provides more option to Dhoni. Though Plessis would get his chance, I believe Dhoni will play Styris in this match.

@Arun,
Yeah.. This time, Fleming & Dhoni has a selection nightmare for every match..

@Siddharth,
Yes. Tharanga is part of the squad. Randiv's article in TOI confirmed that. I don't know why CSK website is not revealing it

@Senthil,
I do agree that Dhoni sometimes stick to his wrong beliefs a little longer - when it is clearly visible to outside eyes it is wrong. (e.g. Not inclined to play 3 spinners in earlier matches in IPL3). May be the effect of living in a world of its own. But thankfully, he realizes ultimately and changes his methods.

if Tharanga is confirmed, I would prefer (not predict):

1. Vijay
2. Tharanga
3. Raina
4. Badrinath
5. Dhoni
6. Morkel
7. Styris
8. Kulasekara
9. Ashwin
10. Jakati
11. Southee

if Bravo is available, i'll pick him ahead of Kulasekara.

I would also go for tharanga if he is confirmed. else
vignesh coz this guy looks promising.
plus will pick du plessis def over styris.
so my xi would be
vijay
vignesh/tharanga
raina
badri
dhoni
albie
fau du plesis
ashwin
jakati
tim southee
thyagi...(wish doesn't do thyagam his runs)

@AGA,
Bravo might not play in Season 4 because of WI-Pakistan Series

@GLO,
I believe Mukund is the most talented one of the Indian openers, let us see how the team approaches it.

4. Morkel
5. Dhoni
6. Du Plessis
7. Badrinath
8. Jakati
9. Southee
10. Ashwin
11. Kulasekara is the side i would go with.... Duplessis can be the finisher for CSk.. he was mighty good in the WC... Raina and FAF give more bowling options.. With douggie out; need to have two specialist overseas bowlers ...The batting is rock solid with vijay and badri playing sheet anchors and the rest can go beserk... southee, ash and kula are no mugs with the bat...
