Chennai Super Kings - Players to be Retained & Bought

Players to be retained
1. Dhoni: 3-in-1 player. Captain, Wicketkeeper and Batsman. Any doubts on whether he would be retained??
2. Raina: Foundation of all CSK Campaigns. Has not yet publicly confirmed on whether he would agree to be retained by Chennai Super Kings
3. Murali Vijay: Had my doubts about his adaptability to South African pitches. Has proved his ability without any doubt.
4. Albie Morkel: This all-rounder is the key to the team's wonderful balance.

Substitutes:
1. Ashwin: If any of the Indian players does not agree to be retained, 3rd Indian player to be retained
2. Bollinger: If Albie does not agree to be retained, I would expect Bollinger to be retained.

Rules of Retention
1. Maximum 4 Players can be retained - Only a maximum of 3 Indian players and a maximum of 2 foreign can be retained.

Players to be bought in Auction
1. Davy Jacobs: Impressed by his performance and attitude. Hope CSK are able to buy him in auction.
2. Shane Watson: Worth every penny he gets paid. Let us see whether any club goes crazy about him.
3. Ashwin: If he is not retained
4. Murali/Vettori: World class spinners who surely has another 2-3 years left in them.
5. Zaheer/Malinga: Whoever is not retained by Mumbai Indians
6. Hussey: He would be a wonderful addition to the team
7. Bravo/Oram/Razzaq: Another Bowling all-rounder would add a lot more value to the team.

8. Dinesh Karthick:  Might be very tough to buy him in auction since he is a valuable addition to any team.
9. Yo Mahesh: Will be a valuable slow bowler addition to CSK Team.
10. Badrinath: His presence in the team is crucial especially in the low-scoring games.
11. Maharoof:  Any of them would be a huge value addition to any team

Key Strategy: Buy them Young. Rather than putting the priority on winning the immediate season, it is essential to build a team that wins more trophies than any other club in India.

Who do you think should Chennai Super Kings buy and retain?

Interesting that you picked Albie over Murali to be retained. My picks for the four slots would be -

1) Dhoni at $1.8M
2) Raina at $1.5M

these two have formed the core of all our successful campaigns so far and it is a no brainer to retain them. For the next two slots priced at $900k and $500k, I would pick Murali and Ashwin. They seem to work really well in tandem and Chennai cannot afford to lose its two best bowlers.

I would however like us to try and get as much of the squad back as possible in the auction. Badri, Vijay and Morkel would be first choices.

i would retain albie for sure..i feel csk havent made much use of his abilities with the bat....he is afterall the most experienced player in t20s too..

albie said on his twitter account he would prefer to be with csk..

and i would retain either of murali/ashwin and go for the others in the auction..

jacobs will be a great buy, watson will be retained by rr mostly, he is their key player imo....

My pick would be
1) Dhoni
2) Raina
3) Albie
4) Ashwin

We need to get Vijay as well, but it might be easier to get a batsman through the auction as opposed to getting a good spinner, especially one who can bat.

its a no brainer tat we wud retain dhoni and raina given half a chance, and i think we shud also retain morkel and murali(the 800) one...

dont u guys feel tat we wud automatically retain vijay and ashwin cause they are our catchment players??? same for balaji and badri...

@robin
good thoughts on who we need to buy, yeah we need to buy em young, and we need to buy a good strike bowler and an explosive opener if we do manage to retain who'ever i've mentioned above... but really zaheer and yo mahesh??? nah... dinesh karthick is good, we cud even try to buy murali karthik(really economical)??

Dhoni & Raina for sure. These 2 would definitely go for over 1,8 mil in the auction. So just retain them. Remember, even if we pay 2 mil each to both it would only be counted as 1.8 & 1,5 mil.

3rd player would be albie. All others we can pick up in auction. Vijay is good, but there are replacements available in case we miss out on him. Regarding Ashwin, I dont think any franchisee (maybe except KKR) would pay more than 0.5 mil for him so soon. We should risk it and try to get him for below that in auction.

I don't think anyone would go for balaji/badri in the auction. So we may be able to easily retain one of them. I hope jakati & anirudh won't go to auction as they did not play more than 75% of CSK games last season.

Need one solid opener to fill haydos boots. Mike Hussey may be a good choice considering his temperament and he is a big match player. I won't be surprised if we get Dravid in the auction. I don't think RCB would retain him and dravid has a good history with india cements.

Would also love one of David Hussey/Brad Hodge to be picked up.

Bolly would be a hot pick for all clubs now. If we can retain him then good, otherwise we can always go for mitchell johnson/juan theron.

We should go all out for murali, incase we lose out we can look at botha/swann.

I don't know, but something tells me jaddu would be a CSK player next year.

In my point of view most of the teams except for KKR and the punjab team would like to retain most of their players. But the main worry for us is because of the 2 new teams that got added. They are the cause of worry. They would like to spilt across the teams in order to form a formidable team. Anyhow, I guess chennai will certainly go all out to ensure that most of the players who had played for the Chennai team might get retained. I feel the possible replacements as far as CSK is concerned is Jacob Oram, no more Flintoff, Thussara and Nthini. They are the players who are either underutilized or never utilized. So they could be replaced with either Victoria/ South australia/ Warriors team players. This augers well for the team.

It may not be as simple as the numbers 1.8-1.5-0.9-0.5 present. If you buy four players at these prices, you will be left with little to buy anyone else of worth and may end up with the likes of Rohan Gavaskar.

Retain Dhoni and throw every one else into the pool. I am willing to let go of Raina if I can get Sathish. And a Raina not under Dhoni may be a different ball game!

It is critical that VB and his friends retain the back-room. It is equally critical that they do not get swayed emotions.

It is all fine that the team is well knit unit and are a united bunch. However the sooner they realize that they have to start from scratch, the better it is.

@rk,
My choices were to ensure that CSK does not end up overpaying. Since that would affect us buying the right eleven..

Murali - Utmost has another 3 years.. So paying so much is a tough choice.. Better to buy him in auction.

Ashwin - Not worth 900K.. So better buy him in auction.

Whereas, I am sure Vijay & Morkel are going to fetch 1.4Million USD between them.

@ Siddharth,

Thanks for the tip. Now only Raina has to confirm his allegiance to CSK.

Not sure Watson would be retained. He is dissatisfied with the franchise that they were not ready to increase his fee for IPL3 even after such a good performance in IPL1.

Also who would like to be a part of a weak team like RR?

@TX,
I am not sure.. I believe Vijay would surely get good money.. Since he would be the best Indian opener available in auction.. (Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir are expected to be retained by their teams).. whereas there would be quite a few Indian spinners available(Ojha, Mishra, etc. ) in the market...

@Cub,
Believe Davy Jacobs would be the foreign opener we are looking for..

@M,
I don't agree that retaining four players is a bad strategy.. Since i am sure all the teams would end up paying 50% of salary to 4 players and 75% of salary to 7 players.. CSK did well because other players like Vijay & Ashwin bought at throwaway prices did better or as good as 7 players.

@Robin,

Jacobs is a wham-bham kind of opener. He is not proven material yet. Also teams that go only by reputation (read KKR and KXP) will go all out to get him. We need someone capable of holding one end up and explode if necessary aka Hussey/Dravid maybe even Clarke.

Watson would be very pricey pick considering his IPL exploits and the form he is showing in this tour. We should just play mischief in the auction and try to increase the market value for these players.

I have never seen Raina to be very proactive in media/twitter. He wont "announce his allegiance" i guess. But yeah, there is no reason for him to leave a team that is the best in IPL.

I really hope the english is coming this year to IPL. Swann would be a great buy if we miss out on murali.

We should hold on to Kemp. We can pick him as a sub fielder. He was worth every penny we spent on him last season. His catches have won matches.

I would like to see all these players again in our team. i know its impossible. but we are now the best 11 IPL can produce.

My heart says to retain the same team. But practically speaking its not possible. We should retain Dhoni, Morkel and try to get thru auction the other players. My choice would be
Shane Watson
Vijay
Badri
Anirudh
Murali
Ashwin
Jakati
Praveen Kumar
Dougie
Raina/Rohit sharma/Satish
Balaji

Bcos dhoni is the main factor. Raina ofcourse is the wonderful player but without dhoni he has to prove. Opening slot if we get shane watson and vijay it will be very good followed by raina/rohit/badri then msd, morkel, anirudh, satish,aswin, murali, dougie, jakati/balaji would be the competitive team. But we have to get them. Hope all will come for the CSK in the coming years also under the leadership of MSD.

lol @ the one who compares Rajagopal Sathish with Raina, Sathish is good no doubt, but Raina is something different and is worth every $ csk shell out for him

and albie was the only foreign player who was assured a place in the xi unless he was injured, if u have noticed

as for dravid, yes there is a chance csk could get him, and the India Cements link could help

dk too has a good chance if dd dont retain him....

bollinger should be a priority in the auction, if not him Mitchell Johnson if he decides to play in the IPL

Well done CSK Team, very well deserved. Phenomenal display of cricketing skills all through CLT20.We truly admire, adore and salute the entire CSK team for having done Chennai and India proud. MS captaincy skills were exceptional and right from day 1 it all went right for us.I wish the winning trend continues to be with us for the forthcoming IPL seasons too.

I feel Bollinger should be preferred instead of Morkel. the fact being Morkel is an all rounder edges him past douggie..
